Selkirk College students call for free adult ed

The Selkirk College Students Union is joining a campaign to make adult basic education free again.

The province no longer funds the courses and instead provides individual student grants.

Tl’ehskwiisimka Marshall with the Canadian Federation of Students told Nelson city council on Monday night they don’t understand the change.

But Selkirk College says the new tuition model hasn’t discouraged enrollment.

Vice-president Neil Coburn says the college is doing everything it can to ensure money isn’t a barrier.

The college is supplementing the province’s grants with its own bursaries.

Coburn says so far no one has been charged tuition but those who can afford it may be asked to pay.
