Castlegar eyes parcel tax

Castlegar’s 2016 budget could feature a first for the city.

Councilor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff says a parcel tax could be introduced.

If it is implemented Castlegar would join a number of local communities which levy a parcel tax of some sort including Trail, Nelson and Rossland.

Additionally, a tax increase of 4% for residents and 2% for businesses is being proposed.

The budget was put out for public viewing and questioning last night.

In 2015 Castlegar was ranked 67th lowest out of 163 municipalities in BC in terms of taxes and charges levied on an average single family home.
