Flood Preparedness Explored, Recovery Meeting Returns

While the Boundary Flood Recovery Team continues efforts to develop a Flood Response Plan, there’s precautions that you can take as well.

A good start is being informed by knowing if you’re at risk, and if your property has previously flooded. Making a household emergency plan is effective, and should include an escape for your animals as well. You could also prepare an emergency kit including documents, medications, and other supplies. Supporting and upholding your propane and oil tanks is another measure you can take, and it’s crucial that you know how to turn off utilities. You can protect your property by storing valuables and appliances up high, raising electrical outputs, and using a sump-pump. Drainage works or activities near water may require permissions such as a section 11 permit. The Recovery Team adds that sand and sandbags will be made publicly available when flood conditions are approaching.

The Flood Response Plan will ensure that the public is appropriately informed, and Emergency Operations Centres initiated. It will also ensure precautionary measures such as identifying locations for temporary flood protection and sand bags are carried out. The Plan will monitor a list of trigger points such as weather warnings and snow-pack data to guideline initiating Emergency Operation Centres.

A Boundary Flood Recovery Update Meeting hits the River Valley Community Church tomorrow, January 24th, at 6PM. For more details click here.
