A unique opportunity starts tomorrow for some local athletic competitors. Our region has earned a spot in the Special Olympics BC Provincial Championship, and tomorrow morning you can see off the team! Athletes from Grand Forks and Castlegar have combined for The Special Olympics Floor Hockey Team.
Special Olympics Swimming Coach Erica McCluney says the team has been practicing:
“It’s been fantastic, they’ve had practices with both the Castlegar Rebels and the Grand Forks Border Bruins, so they’ve got an excellent support network already and tons of fans, and we’d just like to wish them well.”
McCluney adds that the athletes embody what the Special Olympics are all about:
“It’s wonderful, if people would like to get involved we would love to have more volunteers, but ultimately it’s about diversity, inclusion, respect, and empowerment, and all of our athletes embody that.”
The bus sets off for Vernon tomorrow at 11:30AM in the Grand Forks Save-On-Foods parking lot. You’re encouraged to come out around 11:15AM to show your support.
