Boundary Metis Community Association Wraps Up Snowshoe Program

Last month was a real trek for the Boundary Metis Community Association. That’s because their 6 week-long snowshoeing program at the Kettle River Provincial Park wrapped up! Ginette Wheeler is one of the program’s organizers.

She says almost 40 different people took part in the activity.

“Our ages were from…. the youngest was 10 and our oldest was 77 years old, and we had a couple that were visiting from Holland that came to I think 4 weeks of the 6-week program, so that was our farthest away.”

Wheeler adds that she hopes the free program will return.

“We have purchased those snowshoes to stay within the West Boundary, next year we’re hoping to have group meetings and different areas and locations for people to gather to do a snowshoe program; it will look a little bit different but we still want to carry on.”

She says family-friendly programs are important to our area, especially in rural BC, as is acknowledging the indigenous community. A Celebration Dinner was held to mark the program’s end as well as honor the program’s participants, and the dinner received $800 in grant funding from the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary.
