Big White Public Meeting Addresses Cannabis Store

How do you feel about a proposed non-medical cannabis retail store at Big White? That’s what the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary is asking at a public meeting next week. The proposed location is on the lower floor of the Village Centre Mall.

Corporate Communications Officer Frances Maika says the community has already expressed some input:

“There was an earlier public hearing about whether or not we needed to amend the bylaw related to retail cannabis at Big White, and the people who attended that public hearing were in support of treating cannabis retail like other retail up at Big White so there was an amendment to our bylaws related to that.”

Maika says despite that, comments and feedback will help determine their recommendation to the Liquor & Cannabis Regulation Branch.

She adds that if you can’t make it out, you can still have your say:

“This new online engagement tool JoinTheConversation.rdkb.com is a great way for people to follow projects, you can register, you can sign up to receive information, and we’re hoping this really makes a change with a number of people who to this date may not have been able to be involved who can now have a say.”

Attendees will have a chance to speak, and written submissions are welcome until 11am that day. Director Vicki Gee will be present along with RDKB staff. The public meeting lands at the Big White Fire Hall on Porcupine Road next Wednesday, March 27th, at 6PM.
