Grand Forks City Council Talks Solid Waste Collection Fees

Solid waste collection service fees were discussed last week in Grand Forks council chambers. A monthly charge of $13.50 up from $11.50 is needed to meet the city’s 2019 revenue requirements. Last year the contract price increased by five percent, and a similar increase is expected in July. A switch to weekly collection services also saw an increase of material going to the landfill.

Councillor Chris Moslin says he favors the RDKB’s Tag-A-Bag system, and wants a flat rate for bags with no monthly fee:

“City customers, they have to pay $13.50 for solid waste pickup even if they don’t generate any garbage, even if they just generate one or two bags, and I can tell you as a homeowner in the Regional District I’m hard pressed to generate a bag of garbage.”

Councillor Christine Thompson explains why it’s necessary:

“We have a contract through the Regional District with the Solid Waste Collection Management Agency, and regardless of whether or not we put out one bag at three dollars a week we still have to pay our end of the contract.”

Council gave the amended bylaw first three readings last Monday, and final adoption is slated for next week. The last time council adjusted solid waste collection fees was in 2017.
