Castlegar to move towards parks smoking ban

Castlegar city council has decided to work on a bylaw to prohibit smoking in parks.

If passed, the bylaw would be in effect at all parks within city limits. Councilor Florio Vassilakakis says enforcement would likely be complaint-driven.

Forty communities across BC have smoking bylaws in place which exceed regulations in the BC Tobacco Control Act. In order for the proposed legislation to move forward it must first be approved by the Ministry of Health.

Stats from BC Healthy Communities show 86% of British Columbians don’t smoke and 71% of smokers in the province support similar bylaws.
