Red Cross issues update on recovery efforts

Just over a year since catastrophic flooding in the Boundary, the Canadian Red Cross is providing an update on recovery efforts. The Red Cross says they’ve conducted over 1500 one-on-one meetings with individuals and families to help support their personal recovery efforts, and provided over 440 households across the region with financial assistance for recovery.

Emergency Management Senior Manager Jen Allen explains how they’re currently active in the area:

“We’re working along side the Boundary Flood Recovery Team, we have a case manager working out of the office that’s meeting directly with impacted households; we do have the Support to Small Business Program active….”

She adds that program has distributed funds to 108 businesses so far but applications are still being processed. The Red Cross says they managed and supported two shelters and two reception centers during their stay, plus, over 840 clean-up kits were distributed to help people clean up once returned home.

Allen says they’ve worked with many families and businesses:

“We were able to support, for example, the Boundary Food Bank who really opened it’s doors and really provided the extra support that was needed in the early days of the flooding events, we’ve been able to support them to, you know, re-stock their shelves….”

She says the Red Cross will continue to work alongside the Recovery Team on emerging needs and on the recovery plan.
