Boardroom partners up to plant trees

Earth Day may be behind us but a local project inspired by the annual event is finally coming to fruition. The Boardroom Cafe and partners are planting trees in Grand Forks.

Owner Savanna Hines explains:

“For Earth Day on April 22nd we decided that we wanted to donate a portion of our sales to buy trees, and then we partnered with the Kootenay Boundary Outdoor Educators to plant them and a couple of different property owners for the land to plant them on.”

She says Interfor is another partner, and not only are they matching the number of trees the Boardroom comes up with, but they are also helping ensure the right types of trees are being planted in the correct places.

Hines says they’d like keep the ball rolling:

“It’s going to end up being four (hundred) to six-hundred trees that we’re going to plant from this one day of our proceeds from our sales, so the chemistry between the Boardroom Cafe, the Kootenay Boundary Outdoor Educators, and Interfor is pretty awesome and we got pretty excited at our meeting about it -that we kind of do want to keep doing it every year.”

She adds if they continue next year they could use community support to help plant trees and allocate land. Hines says about 400 trees are being planted near Sunranch, and 100 to 200 are set for a private property near the Highway 41 turnoff. Planting begins June 10th.
