Hard hitting perseveres at 37th annual GFI despite wet weather

Grand Forks International got off to a soggy start this week, but there’s still some great baseball ahead.

The last two games were cancelled yesterday due to rain, explains tournament coordinator Steve Boutang.

“One of them’s actually been made up already today, and then we’ll have another game made up tomorrow. We’ve shortened the games for the rest of the round robin on Friday and tomorrow to seven innings instead of nine and that will allow us to get five games a day in. Then, everything will get back to normal, hopefully, on Sunday as far as the schedule is concerned.”

Despite the interruptions, Boutang adds people’s spirits haven’t been dampened.

“It was a big loss not to have it last year, but people are genuinely happy to be at the ball park enjoying a beverage and camaraderie with fellow baseball fans. The quality of the baseball has been outstanding. We have 10 fantastic teams, real parity amongst them, so most games have been one or two run games.”

Games go today at 2 PM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. Tomorrow  they’re at 8 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:30 PM and 7:00 PM. Click here to see the full schedule.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Grand Forks, with risk of a thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon. So far, Sunday and Monday look beautiful and sunny.
