Honouring the Land Ceremony held for impending Head Start Centre

This Monday was a special day for the Circle Of Indigenous Nations Society in Grand Forks. An Honouring the Land Ceremony took place where the Talking Little Feet Aboriginal Head Start Centre is set to be built, on Grand Forks Secondary school-grounds on 12th Street.

COINS Executive Director Kris Salikin says about 80 people were present, including guest speakers Minister Katrine Conroy, and MP Richard Cannings.

“They really talked about reconciliation, and they talked about giving space for indigenous children and families to heal from some of our past history in Canada, and they talked about a space for indigenous families to be able to gather and feel safe and connected to culture and to be well.”

Salikin says they’re quite excited about the opportunity, and have been working on the project for over a year now.

“Families won’t have to pay any fees for their children to attend this centre, and then the other piece of it is really honouring our childcare workers, and early-years workers, and ensuring that they’re paid a wage that reflects the care they provide for our children.”

The two-story centre will offer eight infant-toddler spaces and 16 three to five year old spaces. COINS was successful in their application for the program earlier this year, securing 10 years of operational funding. A Grand Opening event will be held around Winter, which Salakin explains will be a similar event to Monday’s.
