Skills Centre set to land in Grand Forks

The Skills Centre is coming to Grand Forks after years of supporting community members in the Trail area.

That from Program Specialist Amanda Sukoveoff:

“The Skills Centre is brand new to Grand Forks but in Trail they have been operating since 1997. They’ve been engaged by providing employment assistance services to the community, training opportunities, poverty reduction initiatives, and much more….”

Sukoveoff adds the two year contract allows for a possible two year extension, and they’ll be operating out of an office at Community Futures Boundary. Free Skills Training and Employment Programs are running in both Trail and Grand Forks, starting with a thirteen week Skills Training for Trauma Survivors program this September.

She says there are also programs for young adults, and for those that are fifty-five years of age and over:

“That’s a question I got -why are we only doing these certain categories, like ‘what about the general population?’…. The funding was available for these categories because they are underrepresented and they are vulnerable populations.”

She adds the goal is to reduce the unemployment rate, and meet the needs of those vulnerable and under-represented groups. The programs are funded through the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, and while they’re free to the public -seats are limited. See the attached posters for additional details.
