Rock Creek Fall Fair going and growing green

It’s nearly time for the Rock Creek Fall Fair! The annual West Boundary event is set to return to the fairgrounds this weekend. You may have also noticed a RCFF competitor in the Demolition Derby at the Grand Forks & District Fall Fair the weekend prior.

Treasurer Lisa Sims says this year’s theme is “going and growing green”:

“This year we have actual recycle stations on the property and we are doing composting as well as refundables and recyclables. We are hoping to decrease our waste to the landfill by 50%. We also have installed a water station on site besides the first aid booth so people can bring their refillable water bottles….”

She adds the fairgrounds are also banning styrofoam, plastic straws, stir-sticks, and single-use bags -an effort they intend to expand on every year.

Sims says last year over 9600 people walked through the gates:

“It’s weather…. we need people to come out! How we do at the fair this year dictates all the improvements that we can do on the grounds during the year and keep adding things, so we need people to show up rain or shine.”

She adds that this year 100 mini chickens are being hidden throughout the fairgrounds:

“Kids twelve and under, if they find a mini chicken they take it to the information booth and then they turn it in for a prize!”

Shooting Star Amusements are back Saturday and Sunday with a variety of rides. There will also be live entertainment, and activities including pig and duck races, freestyle motocross, and much more. Sims says to anyone interested in volunteering Saturday: you’ll get a day pass and food voucher for helping out. Click here, or here for more information.
