Grand Forks woman apprehended following standoff

Police were forced to breach the home of an “emotionally distraught” Grand Forks woman after she allegedly threatened officers with violence.

RCMP Southeast District Media Relations Officer Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey reported, “On March 28, 2020 at approximately 7:45 p.m. Grand Forks RCMP received a request to respond to a residence in the 2100-block of 68th Avenue to check on the well-being of a local resident. At the scene frontline officers encountered an emotionally distraught adult woman, who they believed to be armed with a firearm.”

The RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team, the RCMP Southeast District Containment Team and specially trained RCMP Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene.

Roughly 15 residents were evacuated from a portion of the woman’s apartment building during negotiations. Traffic access war also closed off as a precautionary measure.

“Despite all efforts to de-escalate the situation, and have the woman exit her home, tactically trained members were required to breach the door to her residence in order to apprehend her,” stated Cpl. O’Donaghey.

The 43 year-old woman is now in hospital undergoing a full medical assessment.
