True North Distilleries Rally to Produce Sanitizer

From booze to news, that is what’s happening in BC’s Boundary District.

In this case it is not something to sip or savour, but it does have lasting soothing effect on your health.

In response to government officials asking distilleries to assist in the production of hand sanitizers, True North Distilleries has been creating the much needed product in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We got a note from the liquor control saying we were permitted to do and donate or sell to the public because the situation was so dire that there wasn’t a better alternative,” said True North Distillery Owner Scott Stewart.

The distillery, along with other suppliers have pooled their resources and have stopped regular production.

“We’re completely shut down for making whiskey or anything else. While we do this it takes all of our staff, it is a new process.” Scott added. “We’ve had some help from the local Mill Interfor, they’ve helped us source the materials. I’ve has friends with vineyards helping out with ingredients. We’re actually manufacturing our own glycerin from used vegetable oil believe it or not. Because everything is sold out across the country.”

Although they are up to the challenge, there is still the matter of handing out free product to first responders, and the public. When asked who’s footing the bill, Scott Stewart pointed to those who made the call for action.

“We’re hoping that the government is going to cover costs. I mean, they’re quite busy. They’re doing a great job in getting things going and we’re not at the top of their list. But all the distilleries are hoping that the government will come in and cover costs on having provided this service… because frankly, none of the ingredients that go into this product are something that any of us keep in stock. We can’t reuse the bottles, the labels are different, the ingredients are just things we don’t use. We’ve gone above and beyond what might be expected to make this happen, and its stuff we’ll never reuse for our regular business. This is a completely separate issue.”
