Nelson moves closer to panhandling bylaw

The Mayor of Nelson says the city’s panhandling bylaw will help address safety and equity for everyone on the street.

Deb Kozak is speaking after council narrowly passed third reading of new regulations that would restrict how panhandlers can operate.

She says its a poverty issue but if everyone knows the rules that can help ease tension.

If adopted the new rules will allow bylaw officers to move panhandlers along if they’re within 5 metres of certain locations or remain in one spot for more than an hour.

Small fines are also possible.
