Crash knocks out power in Grand Forks

A single-vehicle crash on Central Avenue near 16th Street in Grand Forks this morning has knocked out power and closed the highway.

The City of Grand Forks says a power pole was severed. Power between the high school and Motel 99 is affected and other utilities including optical fibre may be affected.

The city says electrical crews have already isolated and minimized the area of the outage and some nearby service has been restored. However, they said there is “significant damage” and the full extent is being assessed.

DriveBC says a detour is in effect until further notice.

Police say their investigation is ongoing, but the driver is suspected to have fallen asleep. They were not injured.
