Nearly 600 Boundary properties placed on evacuation alert

An evacuation alert has been issued for nearly 600 properties and almost 1,200 people throughout the Boundary due to the risk of flooding.

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary says the alert applies to properties from Carmi to Christina Lake that lie in the floodplain. Properties within Grand Forks and Greenwood city limits are not affected.

The alert area includes 591 addresses and a population of 1,182. People do not have to leave their homes, but should be ready to do so at a moment’s notice.

“The regional emergency operations centre is issuing these alerts as rivers continue to rise,” says Mark Stephens, RDKB’s emergency manager.

The evacuation alert, issued this evening, is in addition to previous alerts and orders issued for Manly Meadows and Johnson Flats in rural Grand Forks. The evacuation orders there cover another 22 properties and an estimated 50 people while another 34 properties and 72 residents are on evacuation alert.
