Category 2 open fires will be banned again as of noon Friday throughout the Southeast Fire Centre.
The BC Wildfire Service says it’s due to increased fire danger ratings and a warming trend throughout the southeast. The prohibition is expected to remain in place until Oct. 28 or further notice.
The ban specifically applies to the following:
- One or two burning piles no larger than two metres high by three metres wide
- Burning of stubble or grass over an area less than 0.2 hectares
- Fireworks
- Binary exploding targets
- Air curtain burners
- Sky lanterns, and
- Burn barrels or burn cages
This prohibition does not apply to campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller nor to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.Larger Category 3 open fires have been prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre since May 18. Category 2 fires were also banned that day, but then allowed again as of June 15.
