Man sentenced in Gyro Park knife attack

A Grand Forks man has been sentenced for an attack on a bylaw officer in Gyro Park last fall.

Andre Conn was sentenced this week to three years in prison and three years probation for assault with a weapon and mischief.

Conn attacked bylaw officer Jon Wilson with a knife in October and then smashed in the windows of his work truck.

Mayor Everett Baker says the length of the sentence “gives notice that actions have consequences.”

Conn, who was 41 years old at the time of his arrest, had originally been facing charges of making death threats and mischief before the city lobbied prosecutors to bring stiffer charges, which the RCMP laid in November 2023.

“On behalf of Council and staff, I would like to express my satisfaction that the well-being of the community was reflected in the outcome of this case.”

The city also extended compliments to Crown Counsel in securing a conviction on the assault on a city employee and damage to a city vehicle.

Since the attack, Grand Forks has made changes to the visibility and safety of its community safety officer, including a new uniform, based on a risk assessment by WorkSafeBC.
