Grand Forks Fire Rescue’s year of growth

Grand Forks Fire Rescue Fire Chief Rich Piche says its been a busy year since stepping into the top job in May.

With 17 new firefighters added to the ranks and a shift in organization philosophy based on trust, values and empowerment, Piche says the department is thriving.

“We’re in a really good spot heading into 2025.” said Piche.

“So far, we’re at 365 calls for the year. Roughly 184 of those have been fire related, 79 rescue, and 102 first responders.”

The return of duty crews has also been a huge accomplishment for the town and the department.

“I’m happy to say about 70% of the department now are trained first responders which is just incredible and that was a last piece before we could implement duty crews again.” said Piche.

“They run from seven at night till seven in the morning, Monday to Monday, and it gives people more of a chance to utilize their skills and provides a bit of work-life balance.”

“We have a minimum crew of five that will respond to all minor calls in the evening. And if there’s anything major, it turns into all call that the entire department can get paged. So, when you’re not on, that gives you a break.”

“When you are on, you know, with 100% certainty that you will be called and utilized.”

Fire Chief Piche says the strength of the quad is credit to team and their commitment.

“We can’t do this without them. They are first and foremost the most important part of our organization, our firefighters.”

“Another part that’s been a huge piece of our success has been the hiring of our Deputy Fire Chief Mike Daloise.”

“It’s just been harmonious and a great relationship right out of the gate and we wouldn’t be where we’re at without his assistance.”

“He was a great hire and as well as the other Deputy Brittany Jalbert. So, it’s been a group effort and the firefighters are buying in to the vision and I’m excited for 2025.”
