Grand Forks’ used oil recycling depot gets an upgrade

Grand Forks is getting a bigger and better drop-off site for motor oil and other used automotive fluids with Interchange Recycling announcing the Bottle Depot on 8058 Donaldson Dr has received new recycling infrastructure.

The depot has received a 20ft sea container with a 2,200 litre tank to store program materials.

“With the addition of this new recycling infrastructure, we’re able to manage these automotive materials more efficiently and safely,” said Vikas Soni, Director, Grand Forks Bottle Depot.

“We’re now able to provide residents with a convenient, close to home solution to recycle materials such as used motor oil and antifreeze, ensuring they are properly handled and kept out of our environment and our local waterways.”

Used oil is a valuable resource and if it is recycled at one of Interchange Recycling’s dedicated public recycling centres it can be recovered and reused.

Used oil can be re-refined into new lubricating oil or material inputs for manufacturing or energy products. Additionally, used oil filters contain metal, which is recycled into metal products like rebar, nails, and wire.

Used oil and antifreeze containers are recycled and used to manufacture new oil containers, drainage tiles, and parking curbs. Used antifreeze is refined and reused as new automotive antifreeze.

“Our ability to properly recycle and re-introduce used materials back into B.C.’s circular economy is important work that requires efficient infrastructure to enable the safe collection, handling and storage,” said David Lawes, CEO, Interchange Recycling.

“This new infrastructure will help keep more automotive materials out of landfill and will enable the hard-working team at The Grand Forks Bottle Depot to collect materials from residents of Grand Forks.”
