Tyler Burke, Logan McCabe and Eric Kahl of the Grand Forks Border Bruins have been named the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League 3 Stars of the Week, for the period ending April 13/25.
Burke – Top Forward – The Vernon native scored five goals, including a game-winner, and added five assists in four games to help the Border Bruins sweep the Revelstoke Grizzlies to claim their first ever KIJHL Teck Cup championship. In Game 1, Burke had two goals and an assist in a 7-3 win. In Game 2, Burke had a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win, helping set up Levi Astill’s winner. In Game 3, Burke scored twice, including the winner, in a 5-1 final. And in the deciding Game 4, on April 13, Burke had three assists in a 5-2 win. Burke finished second in playoff scoring with 27 points in 17 games and led with 13 goals. His performance earned him Teck Cup MVP honours.
McCabe – Top Defenceman – The Edmonton native had two goals and four assists in four games to help the Border Bruins defeat the Grizzlies and earn their first ever KIJHL Teck Cup championship. He played an average of 23:33 a game and was plus five. McCabe opened the series with a two-assist effort in a 7-3 win. In Game 2, a 5-2 win, he had another two-assist performance and helped set up the winning goal. In Game 4, McCabe scored twice, including the Teck Cup clinching goal, in a 5-2 win. He finished the playoffs with six goals and 19 points in 17 playoff games. It’s his third Top Defenceman selection of the playoffs.
Kahl – Top Goalie – The Saskatoon, Sask., native stopped 113 of 121 shots in four games to help the Border Bruins sweep the Grizzlies to win the KIJHL Teck Cup. Kahl posted a 2.00 goals against average and a .934 save percentage as he was excellent in the crease. In Game 2, Kahl made 28 saves in a 5-2 win. In Game 4, Kahl stepped up to the challenge with an excellent 40-save performance. Kahl played in 13 of the Border Bruins’ 17 games and went 12-1-0 with a 2.18 GAA and a .929 SP. Kahl was named the KIJHL’s Top Goalie for three straight weeks.
