Christina Lake woman loses $1,500 in phone scam

RCMP confirm a 74-year-old Christina Lake woman has been defrauded in a phone scam.

The woman said she was contacted several times on the phone by a man who claimed that she had won a sweepstakes. To claim her prize, she needed to send $1,500 via bank draft to an account in Toronto.

She sent the money, but the man contacted her again and asked for another $3,500 to claim her prize. At that point, the woman realized she’d been scammed.

Police said she won’t be able to get her money back.

“Please do not send money, bank drafts, electronic money transfers, gift card codes, cryptocurrency, or other forms of non-recoverable and non-traceable currency to strangers,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich said in a news release.

“Thousands of people each day are scammed and don’t realize it until after the money is gone. Remember, take steps to protect your hard-earned money. You can always talk to the police, or other authorities, before sending money to help determine if you are being scammed.”
