Free transit offered in West Kootenay for Earth Day

Residents in the West Kootenay will be able to ride transit for free on April 22 as part of Earth Day initiatives across B.C.

BC Transit said the West Kootenay Transit System will offer free service on both fixed routes and handyDART, making it easier for people to choose lower-emission travel options.

Earth Day highlights the importance of sustainability and encourages actions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Public transit is one way to help lower environmental impact.

The free service in the West Kootenay is part of a broader effort in select communities across the province, with participating systems also including Victoria, Chilliwack and the South Okanagan-Similkameen region.

BC Transit said it continues to work toward CleanBC climate action goals by modernizing its fleet and reducing emissions. The agency is rolling out Phase 1 of its electric bus project, which will bring 125 electric buses to eight transit systems across B.C., including Nelson.

Looking ahead, BC Transit said it is also working to procure heavy-duty hybrid buses to support further emissions reductions.

The agency thanked local partners, including the Regional District of Central Kootenay, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and the City of Nelson, for supporting free transit on Earth Day.
