Along with warm weather, May will bring increased enforcement from B.C. Highway Patrol as part of a high-risk driving and motorcycle awareness campaign.
Police will focus on dangerous behaviours such as impaired driving, speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving and seatbelt violations.
“Impaired driving is one of the classic high-risk behaviours that police will be enforcing throughout the month of May. Another high-risk focus will be excessive speed. Just because the weather is nice and roads are dry, that does not give you permission to speed. In collisions, speed kills.” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.
Drivers are urged to watch carefully for motorcycles and share the road to avoid collisions.
Motorcyclists are reminded to slow down and ride within their ability, take advanced rider training if possible and never ride impaired, tired or distracted.
“There are two keys to keeping motorcyclists safer. Number one, motorcyclists need to slow down and drive defensively. Number two, every other motorist needs to pay attention and consciously look for motorcycles so that collisions can be avoided.” said Corporal McLaughlin.
There will be extra enforcement during the May long weekend, as it’s one of the most dangerous times on B.C. roads.
Safety tips for drivers include watching for motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians, expecting slower traffic and construction delays, planning extra travel time and staying sober and focused.
Drivers who ignore safe, responsible driving habits and engage in high-risk behaviours can face serious penalties, including vehicle impoundment, fines ($483 for an excessive speeding ticket) and towing and insurance costs.
“Public safety is our top priority. We would much rather write you a ticket for excessive speeding or aggressive driving than have to tell your loved ones that you died in a collision.” said Corporal McLaughlin.
Police will be watching closely throughout the month, urging drivers to slow down, stay alert and drive safely.
