Province fast-tracks Kokanee recovery plan

The province has announced they’ve put together an advisory team to fast-track the recovery of the dwindling Kokanee stock in Kootenay Lake.

They’re calling it a five-year action plan and say it will be available for the public to view at the end of this month.

Last fall, provincial biologists counted 18,000 spawning Kokanee in the main body of Kootenay Lake and its tributaries. That’s the lowest number since the annual count started in 1979.

The province has already taken a number of steps to address the Kokanee decline.

This includes changing fishing regulations to decrease Kokanee harvest and increase Gerrard Trout harvest.
