Ex-Grand Forks councillor gets house arrest, probation

A former Grand Forks city councillor has been sentenced to 90 days house arrest, 18 months probation, fined $1,000 and won’t be able to drive for two years.

That was the punishment handed to Michael Wirischagin Thursday in Grand Forks Provincial Court on two impaired-driving related offences.

He was arrested on June 14, 2015 in Midway with a four-year-old girl in the car.

Wirischagin resigned from city council a few months later, shortly after the charges against him became public.

He was convicted in February of having care or control of a vehicle while impaired, but his sentencing hearing has been delayed a couple of times.
