Timing looks like it’s a factor in saving taxpayers some money this year regarding the staffing boost to the Nelson Police Department.
The Director Of Police Services says the NPD should hire one more officer and admin person.
But as the city’s Chief Financial Officer Colin McClure explains it just so happens some officers have left recently so money has been saved as we await replacements there.
If a rookie is recruited as Nelson’s extra police officer, McClure says that could be around an $80,000 salary.
The NPD had estimated around $125,000 per officer, if those people were experienced, in their initial request for two more members.
