IH reacts to 2017 overdose stats

Interior Health is reacting to overdose statistics released by the BC Coroners Service this week.

Medical health officer Doctor Trevor Corneil says last year’s increase in illicit drug overdose and Fentanyl-related deaths is concerning.

He says IH has a number of strong support and treatment options in the Kootenay-Boundary and credits organizations such as ANKORS which help people find treatment.

In the Kootenay-Boundary last year 14 people died from suspected illicit drug overdoses and 16 deaths were Fentanyl-related.

Last year was BC’s deadliest in terms of overdoses deaths.

There was over 1,400 across the province.
