*UPDATED* Evacuation Orders Drop, Damage Assessment Continues

River-levels are dropping across the Boundary, and so are the total of evacuation orders.  On Sunday, evacuation orders for about 1000 properties were lowered to evacuation alerts, including 377 properties in Grand Forks proper, and 102 properties in Rural Grand Forks. It also includes all 415 residences that were on evacuation order in Christina Lake. On Monday approximately 230 more residences in Rural Grand Forks were lowered to evacuation alerts, however 6 remain, mostly on Manly Meadows Road. Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Emergency Operations Center Director Dan Derby says their goal is to have downtown open for business this Tuesday. He also says they’re in talks with the Canadian Red Cross.

Another goal is remove the tiger dam downtown Grand Forks on Monday. They’re trying to get residents back into their homes as fast as possible.

The Advanced Planning Unit from the Canadian Armed Forces has left Grand Forks and headed elsewhere across the province. 47 firefighters trained in rapid damage assessment are surveying structures to see if they’re safe for re-entry. An Environmental Response Officer is identifying hazards and risks as a result of the flooding.
