Community Asks Questions at GFSS Flood Meeting

It was another packed gymnasium at Grand Forks Secondary School yesterday evening for the Boundary Flood Update. The panel included ten agency representatives ranging from the Emergency Operations Centre to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. EOC Director Chris Marsh says our flood was historic.

The flow, and refresh rate were also historic. Insurance Bureau of Canada Consumer & Industry Relations Director Rob de Pruis says if you have overland flood assurance, additional living expenses might be available.

Pruis adds that overland flood insurance is only offered by about 11 of 100 companies in BC. Ministry of Environment Environmental Emergency Response Officer Kandis Lipsett says there’s no significant contamination.

Interior Health Environmental Health Team Leader Juliana Gola says the river was so strong it diluted the water.

The Red Cross is working with the Province on a transition program but not much is yet known. A Hydrological Flood Assessment of the entire river system should help answer a lot of questions once it’s completed and the results are in.
