The biggest single gap in support for Nelson’s so-called street culture population is an outreach worker.
This from Rona Park with the volunteer streetculture collaborative group, who is working on ways to improve supports for people who may be at risk to themselves or public safety.
Park would like the Queen City to hire a person for at least a year to see if that reduces the negative impacts for these individuals, the public, local businesses and for the local police.
Other recommendations include offering basic mental health first-aid training for community members and creating partnership agreements amongst all service providers in town to ensure a consistent, immediate and appropriate response to those in need.
