Permanent boat inspection stations open today

A local group is pleased to hear that 8 inspection stations along BC’s borders are here to stay.

The stations are meant to inspect boats coming into the province to see if they are carrying invasive mussels.

Mike Jeffery, Chair of the East Shore Freshwater Habitat Society, says it’s about time.

The pilot project he mentions saw 4,300 boats inspected between May and October last year.

34 vessels required decontamination and 15 were transporting invasive mussels or their larvae.

Starting today, 5 stations are running along the BC-Alberta border and 3 on the US border for boating season on a permanent basis.
