YRB takes over provincial highway maintenance contract October 1

Yellowhead Road & Bridge (YRB) is getting set to take over the maintenance of highways in the area from Emcon on October 1. The Province awarded the new 10-year contract for Area 09 around Grand Forks and Castlegar to YRB, which comes with improved standards and better highway conditions.

Some of the biggest improvements include increased communication with the public to rapidly changing road conditions during severe weather events and other incidents affecting travel on BC roads. Returning Winter Class A highways to bare pavement within 24 hours of a winter weather event. The previous standard was 48 hours. There will also be increase patrol frequency to 90 minutes on a Class A highway, during a winter storm. The previous standard was four hours.

Contractors will also be required to be more proactive prior to a winter weather event occurring, and to spread anti-icing chemicals.

Class A highways in the area include all of Highway 3, all of Highway 22, Highway 3A from Castlegar north towards Nelson and Highway 3B from Trail east to the junction of Highway 3.
