Kettle River Watershed Authority Leads River Clean-up

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, perhaps you could lend the Kettle River Watershed Authority a hand. River clean-ups are taking place on Saturdays to remove flood debris from shorelines.

Project Officer Mike Tollis says last week was a success! “So last week we did our first effort, on Saturday we had about 20 volunteers out in Johnson flats, and over the 3 hours that we were out there loading up trucks we ended up bring 1300kg of debris up to the dump, it was mostly metal and plastic.”

He adds that if you can’t make it out there’s another way you can help. “One of the other things that we’re already encouraging is if people are seeing this debris, they can upload it to the lightship program, so if you look up RDKB lightship on google it’ll come up, and there is a public debris upload, so you can click on the point and take pictures and then it’s loaded, and then we can look at it just in our offices.”

Tollis also says that it’s important the community feels like they’re doing something will decisions are being made. Clean-ups were originally taking place for only three weekends but could see an extension depending on weather. Those looking to help this Saturday can meet at the Boardroom Cafe at 12:30PM, where they’ll head to the Boothman’s Oxbow Provincial Park area.
