Cannabis Public Hearings Hit Area A, Jewel Lake

Jewel Lake and Electoral Area A will soon have public hearings regarding cannabis. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary board considered prohibiting commercial cultivation and retail cannabis sales at a recent Board of Directors meeting. Public Hearings were held in the fall for Electoral Areas E, C, and B. The RDKB board also adopted bylaws to prohibit commercial cultivation in cement-based buildings in Area B and Area C, and to prohibit the retail sale of non-medical cannabis in Area B and Mt. Baldy.

Manager of Planning and Development Donna Dean says a bylaw was proposed to prohibit the retail sale of cannabis at Big White, but was defeated by public input after a hearing. “So what happened in the end is the board did not adopt the bylaw, so right now it will continue on, the retail sale of cannabis will be of permitted use at the ski resort.”

Dean adds that if allowed, those selling would still need a permit. “Any potential proponent for retail sale of cannabis would still have to go through the Liquor and Cannabis Regulations Branch of the Province, and they would need a permit through them.”

The Jewel Lake public hearing goes November 26 at Greenwood’s McArthur Centre at 6:30PM. The Area A meeting will be at Trail’s RDKB boardroom on November 13 at 5PM. The Area D public hearing has yet to be announced.
