GF Legion Elects New Executive

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59 in Grand Forks held their election recently. Everett Baker was runner up for Mayor in this year’s municipal election, and now he’s Legion President.

Baker says the Legion played a major role in his community growing up in Eastern Canada. “I remember my Great-Uncle who served in The Cape Breton Highlanders, on a Saturday night getting his shoes all nicely polished, heading out with my Aunt to the Legion, and in my time back there I was in the Navy league in the Sea Cadets.”

He also says he has some plans for 2019. “We’re going to kind of look at Friday nights and Saturday nights, and concentrate on trying to make a planned night out with your sweetheart. So that you know if you’re looking for something to do on a Friday-Saturday night that the Legion will have something going on, whether that’s karaoke, a band, or maybe a dinner theatre or two.”

The 2019 Executive also includes Ken Gresley-Jones as Vice-President, Cher Whyers as Secretary, and Joni Giffin as Treasurer. Louise Lynch, Patrick O’Doherty, and Steve McGibbon are Directors. Baker adds that he hopes to continue the spirit of community involvement into 2019. The Legion hosts fundraisers throughout the year including a kid’s Christmas Breakfast with Santa on December 9th from 8AM to 10:30AM. The Legion also recently held Remembrance Days ceremonies including an appearance at Grand Forks Secondary School.
