State of Local Emergency declared for rural Grand Forks

Ongoing flooding in the Boundary has forced the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and Area D to declare a State of Local Emergency for rural Grand Forks and the Manly Meadows area. The declaration will remain in effect for 7 days.

The RDKB’s Emergency Operations Centre has been at a Level 2 status since the beginning of the week, but is ready to change to Level 3 if needed. A Level 3 status would call for more involvement from provincial partners.

EOC Director Chris Marsh says rain is in the forecast and flooding could peak Thursday or Friday.  He says crews are monitoring trouble spots.

Marsh says current predictions indicate water levels could be higher than those that triggered last year’s floods, though the predictions don’t always indicate the end-result.

Four properties in the Manly Meadows area have been evacuated, the properties encompass six homes. Evacuation alerts remain intact for 190 properties in the Edwards/Gilpin, Johnson’s Flats, Almond Gardens and the Nursery and Darcy neighbourhoods. Forty-seven properties in the Westbridge to Beaverdell area are also on evacuation alert.

The RDKB says some of those evacuation alerts could become evacuation orders if the situation gets worse.
