The Nelson Police Department will be hiring extra staff and needs to come up with a plan for how it will be resourced in future years.
That’s the now public decision from the Provincial Director Of Police Services.
The City Of Nelson needs to hire one more officer and an admin person, the NPD wanted two more officers.
Mayor Deb Kozak says a complete review of the department is needed.

Police Chief Paul Burkart says he was not surprised by the decision and asking for two officers was not an attempt to aim high and settle for low.
Burkart says more officers may yet be needed.
This year’s budget won’t be impacted by the decision but next year’s could take a hit of around $200,000.
